12 Keys To Winning an Argument

12 Keys To Winning an Argument

Aguments are an all too common part of life. They should be avoided if possible. But, if you can’t avoid them you may as well win.

Here’s how.

* Never Accuse your opponent of being wrong.
* If you realize you made a mistake admit it immediately.
* Be pleasant.
* Get your opponent saying “yes” It is a proven technique.
* Let them talk. “Enough rope,” “digging a hole” all that.
* Be receptive. We’ve already established we could be wrong.
* Make it their idea.
* Play on their wants.
* Plea for righteousness. Every body wants “whats right.’
* Back it up. If you’ve got data, use it.
* Issue a challenge. Men especially will fall for this.
* Be a Cool Hand Luke. Aguments can get emotional. It is to your advantage to be the calm rational one.

There you have it, now play nice.

You don’t need to read a 4,000 page book, you don’t have to buy a tape series, you don’t need to stay up late at night to watch infomercials to understand this basic premise. It’s 100% true.

How the number 7 saves you 30 seconds a day - a cell phone hack

From the "simple ways to save 30 seconds" file: college blogger Sean Blanda says the 7 key on your phone is your best friend when you get someone's automated voicemail greeting.

You get a semi robotic female voice saying "The number you have dialed x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x is not available please leave a message after the tone, If you'd like to page this person, press X - BEEP." If you're like me you'd just like to bypass the message. Well just press 7 next time you get someone's voicemail, it will take you straight to the "beep."

The other number that comes in handy with my Cingular phone (like Sean) is the 5 key, which skips through long voicemail messages while you're listening to them. Any other cell phone tricks for speeding up the process of voicemail? Let us know in the comments or at tips at lifehacker.com.
There’s a saying among con-men that smart people are easier targets, because they don’t think they can be conned.
I’m not sure if that’s true, but there’s one scam that’s almost guaranteed to make smart people switch off their brains and reach for their wallets. It’s a trick that’s used so pervasively in our culture, that once you become aware of it, you start to see it everywhere.

Yellow lights last longer when the speed limit is higher. As a rule-of-thumb I estimate about one second of yellow light per every 10 mph (e.g., a yellow light on a 45 mph road lasts approximately 4.5 seconds).

The timing is probably based on some more complicated math involving speeds and braking times, but here in California this formula works pretty well.

What's Happening When It's the Manager Who's Not Performing?

ince managers are usually responsible for getting work done through others, we often don’t recognize when inactivity, apathy, procrastination, and other non-performance viruses creep into our work habits. Our peers may be producing at high levels, but we find ourselves coasting. Sometimes, subordinates may even point this out to their manager.

So what’s going on when the manager is the poor performer?

When non-performance begins to creep into your daily standards, one of the following may be the culprit:

Living a Life of Joy

Stevepavlina.com has one interesting article. When I read this I realized that how true it is as we all run after something which is not present at the moment. And as a result you create stress and fear( that it might happen).

I have seen this example personally. My father always lives a life of joy. He is always happy, having fun with the life. Even though life gives few setbacks, brings tension or unsolvable issues. I have seen that it affects my father momentarily. Then he is back to the Joy mood. And as its been said "laughter is the best medicine" even after being a chain smoker he doesnt have any disease.

Joy is in fact your natural state of being. Babies enter this state very easily because they are fully in the present moment. They do not seek themselves in the past or future.

When you are joyful, your life flows with ease and lightness. Existence is no longer a struggle. Why? Because when you stop resisting the present moment, you stop creating problems for yourself.

In the Forbes' article that Tom referred to yesterday, the writer Dan Ackman pointed to a list of business books the magazine put together in 2002. Forbes calls these The 20 Most Influential Business Books. As you look down the panel experts, you'll notice our own Jack Covert was among those called to contribute. Since this was put together before the blog was born, I thought we should get it put up here.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Hoping that this situation never arises..........

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:
My friend sent this to me and encouraged me to post it and spread the word,
I agreed. If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some
folks. Seriously . please read:
During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured
everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) and just
tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and
got her a new plate of food - while she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid
went about enjoying herself the rest of the afternoon. Ingrid's husband
called later saying that his wife had been taken to the hospital and passed
away. She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify
the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some stroke
victims don't die, they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.
It only takes a minute to read this...
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within three hours
he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke . . . totally. He said the
trick was having a stroke recognized, diagnosed and then getting the patient
medically cared for within three hours, which is tough.
RECOGNIZING A STROKE:
Thank God for the sense to remember the "3" steps.
Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the
lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain
damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple
questions:
S *Ask the individual to SMILE .
T *Ask the person to TALK, to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE. (Coherently) ( i.e. .
. It is sunny out today)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out
their tongue . if the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the
other, that is also an indication of a stroke .
If he or she has trouble with any one of these tasks, call 911 immediately
and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to ten people,
you can bet at least one life will be saved.

Hack Attack: Build your own DVR

Article from LifeHacker

Ever since TiVo came around, I was eager to jump on the time shifting bandwagon. After all, nothing makes a productivity junkie happier than turning an hour-long show into forty minutes. But for all its loyal fan base, TiVo never seemed like the right fit for me.

For my money, time, and, let’s be honest, the gratification of a solid DIY project, I’m a big proponent of building your own digital video recorder (DVR). TiVo is pretty good at what TiVo does, but imagine a world where you can also tweak your TiVo to do anything you can do with any other computer.
Disobeying the order, the man went to try and save his friend. They had been great friends throughout the whole war. Some how he got his friend on the shoulder and staggered back to the trenches but he himself was mortally wounded and his friend was dead.

The officer was angry, “I told you not to go”, and he said “Now, I have lost both of you. It was not worth it”. With his dying breath the man said, “It was worth it, sir” “Worth it!” queried the officer. “How could it be? Your friend is dead and you are mortally wounded!”
